Here's a character I meant to draw last month... but, art block and all.
Surly Squirrel is from a movie called "The Nut Job", which was released to theaters January of 2014. Despite the rather depressing review scores it received, I actually thought it was a really good movie, so naturally I disagree with the RottenTomatoe general consensus... but, that's an argument for another time, I suppose. In any case, even before the film came out, I became a fan of Surly. After I finally got a chance to watch The Nut Job for myself, not only did he remain my favorite character from the film, he became the highlight of the whole movie for me (I mean that in a good way). Hey, say what you will about him and/or The Nut Job, but I thought Surly was awesome (and I plan on drawing him a lot more in the future).
Anyhoo, there's something I want to mention about the drawing itself. When working on it, I decided to not use that "Colorful Outline" technique I've been using for about half a year now, because it just didn't work on this character's dark body. Besides that, I've been kinda wanting to get away from it anyway, since while it often does look very nice, it takes a little too long and zaps the fun out of drawing at times. So, I decided to try something else for this, and honestly, I think it still looks pretty good. I'll let you guys decide if it looks better or not, of if I should go back to the colorful outline stuff (technically, I could still go back and use it here if I wanted to... just let me know what you guys think).
(Also, that background took longer than it should've... but mostly because I spent a long time going "nope, don't like that, try something else [for the fifteenth time]. -lol- )
PLZ account, for anyone who wants one of this character -
