Iggy Koopa (Repaired) by FreezingIceKirby Iggy Koopa (Repaired) by FreezingIceKirby
UPDATED - February 22, 2015

Removed the old description because it was lengthy and boring.  To sum it up; Iggy Koopa's not only my favorite Koopaling of the bunch, but a favorite character in-general.

Okay... so, this drawing.  I drew this back in 2012, and originally, I was quite proud with it.  Recently, however, I took a good look at it and realized just how bad it actually was.  Proportions were terrible (ex: just one leg was nearly twice as thick as his body), lines were bad, the style had parts that just didn't make sense, the background was... odd, among other things.  The drawing I was once proud of, I now felt was shameful.  So, I decided to spend some time in Photoshop fixing it.

And honestly, it took quite a while... a few days, to be precise.  I had to do all the repairs by hand (rather, a laptop finger pad), not to mention I had to figure out just exactly what to change... and I changed pretty much every single aspect of it.  Only a few things went unaltered, so you can see why it took so long.  It probably would've been quicker to just start from scratch on paper... but hindsight's a wonderful gift.

In any case, here are all the changes, starting from the top and working my way down (sorta):

- The hair was completely reworked.  It now sticks out a lot more, as opposed to before when it was kinda stubby.
- The entire head was resized to be a bit bigger.
- The back of his head was extended a bit.
- The right side of the glasses was slightly resized and lowered.
- A line near the top of the glasses was removed.
- The blue around his pupils were expanded.
- The pupils themselves were made smaller.
- The shine across his glasses were removed because I felt it wasn't necessary (or practical).
- His muzzle was repaired to be more rounder in parts.
- Extended the right side of his muzzle (it could barely been seen in the old).
- His nostrils were lowered.
- His bottom lip was reworked.
- A line was added to his tongue (this was absent before).
- The angle of his two right fangs were changed, not to mention they were redrawn.
- Left shoulder was changed to compensate for the altered head size.
- Both hands were made larger.
- The top of the wand was repaired to improve the angle.
- The bottom of the wand was rounded out.
- Some of the spikes on his spiked armbands were reworked.
- I believe I edited his right arm a bit.
- His body was made much wider.
- Belly pad was reworked.
- Also, his muzzle and belly were given a new color to be more accurate to the official artwork.
- Shell was moved back, and in some cases it was redrawn.
- Added an addition to the shell on the right side of Iggy's body (this was absent before).
- All three spikes were repositioned and redrawn to make them wider and smaller.
- The white on his shell (the part that meets the body) was made larger.
- The tail was shortened and repositioned.
- The tail portion between his legs was removed completely.
- His right leg was reduced.
- Most of his right foot was completely redone, which includes removing the sole line and the shape.
- The paw pad was reworked.
- The claws on his right foot were shortened and straightened.
- The left leg was also reduced, and so were the claws (they were also straightened, just like the others)
- His toes were reduced in size and reworked in parts.
- The old cel-shading was deleted and made fresh, plus I added some where there wasn't any before.
- My current art style was applied to make the character more visually appealing.
- Most of the old lighting, which I felt was confusing, ugly, or unnecessary in parts, was removed completely.
- Light from the fire was added, which affects parts of his hair, head, wand, and right arms.
- The background brick pattern, which didn't make a whole lot of sense even back then, was removed in favor or something that looks better.
- The bar graphic was reduced (length-wise) in size to take up less space.
- A shadow was added because... why not.
- And, as per the usual, general line improvements.

...Yeah.  Needless to say, I do think the picture is a hell of a lot better now, not to mention it actually LOOKS more like Iggy now.  In any case, to see the old version, click this link:

So, how about it?  You guys agree it's a much-needed improvement? :D

This guy is brilliant. I dislike much of the Koopaling's voice actors; but this guy is hilarious. He's got such a unique, zany look!
And your artwork ain't half bad either ; )

You did a great job, Iggy is my favourite koopaling too :D I like a lot the glowing effect of the fire. (lol the triangle, square an circles remind me the PlayStation just missing the X) Very well done! :)

Funny enough, the Playstation controller buttons also came to my mind, the first time I drew these things. I wonder what made them decide to go with those shapes? Maybe it's some sort of hidden message... Bad guys use those magic symbols, and Sony IS their rival...

Heh, either way, thanks again for the compliment! I was surprised at how well the flame effect actually came out (looks a lot better than what I originally had pictured in my mind, when first drawing this), so I'm glad that worked out in the end. Also, I'm always glad to hear from more Iggy Koopa fans... he needs more attention. :D

 Well, maybe it's a hidden message... or maybe not because nintendo use that shapes since 1990 in the Super Mario World game :XD: and the Playstation was released in 1994.

You're welcome and yes he needs more attention :) Well, I'll draw him someday too.

This is really cool! You must have put a lot of effort in drawing this. :)
I can't really explain how good this is, it's all just like... really good. X3

I'll admit, I did try to go at least a few extra steps to make the picture better than what I've been doing recently. While the final product wasn't exactly what I had in-mind when I first started (what I originally wanted I couldn't figure out how to do, so I was forced to scrap some ideas), I still think it turned out quite nice... and I'm glad you all like it!

Thanks for the compliment! :D

Looks like you got quite a bit of attention out of this one! As I say, I'm no devotee of the whole "Mario Bros." thing, but I can completely relate to enjoying a redesign. I'm on the side that says that Crash Bandicoot's makeover was a good move. (You've inspired again, so maybe I'll draw that one!) As always, good realization of the character on the pic. I kinda like the background! It would make one interested in playing the game.

Honestly, I never thought it would receive this much attention. I expected it to get maybe ten faves after a month or two... but in the first day?? And now it's almost up to thirty!?

I guess that's what happens when you draw someone who's still in the spotlight... Though that's not to say I'm going to jump ship and get away from drawing obscure characters. My heart still goes out to them, I promise. ;)

In regards to Crash Bandicoot's redesign, you know I'm in the same boat with you on that one. Perhaps alongside you, I'll also try drawing him... Well, for me, I'll try drawing him again. Honestly, I'm still disappointed with my previous attempt... Which somehow (for some unholy reason) became my second-most favorited pic (41). I still feel I need to redeem myself on that one, so maybe I'll do that one day.

(Though really, there's two characters in-particular that I need to "Redeem" myself on. Two that I drew so poorly, that I just have to go back and try again on them, some day.)

Heh, thanks! I appreciate your generous compliment. :D

But you know, it really is strange that they haven't appeared in a Paper Mario game yet. I mean, considering how that series likes to make the player collect seven important items (stars, hearts, etc.) across seven individual chapters... and there ARE seven Koopalings. It just seems like an obvious thing to do. Of course, I'm not trying to bash them for trying to create new characters or anything, as I like some of their originals in those games too (like the Koopa Bros, whom I do plan on drawing... one of these days). So, maybe their time will come soon enough? Who knows...

no problem~! I give credit where credit is due ^_^

And yea, I agree. It really does create a perfect plot with the seven of them...*hopes*

I don't think it looks bad. The colors and lighting actually look much better than some of your other work; which tells me you're getting better at coloring these pictures. Overall, I'm glad you decided to upload this one. I think you did a great job. :)

I did try to put some extra care into the lighting and whatnot, so I'm glad to hear that I am at least improving in that department. :D

Thanks for the compliment on the pic! I appreciate it.
