Iggy Koopa by FreezingIceKirby Iggy Koopa by FreezingIceKirby
It's funny to admit that a couple years ago, I was more of a fan of Larry Koopa, Bowser's third-youngest child minion. I'm not exactly sure why, but I always found him the coolest of the bunch. After witnessing Iggy Koopa's new redesign in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, however... that all changed. At first, I wasn't sure of what to think of this new design... but I soon came to love it, as well as his new wacky personality. Now, Iggy's my new #1 favorite, and I hope Nintendo keeps reusing this new design of his, if and/or when they ever use the Koopalings again (outside of the New Super Mario Bros. series, anyway).

(Personally, I think the Koopalings would fit really well into a Paper Mario game. I wonder why they haven't made an appearance in that series yet? You'd think someone would've thought to do that by now... Maybe in the next Paper Mario game, who knows...)

Anyway, I'll talk about this pic a little bit. While I'm sure it's riddled with plenty of mistakes (my watchers are probably used to it by now though :ashamed: ), I honestly think it came out looking pretty good! For starters, I tried to add some shine detail to the hair, based on some anime art styles... and I can't tell if I succeeded or not (I didn't really understand WHY they draw it like that... all I knew was that it looked nice, so I thought "ehh, why not, let me try that"). I also added some shine to the glasses (those two things that look like strips of scotch tape), because I thought it would make them look more like glass. The flame wasn't too difficult to make, and hopefully the triangle, square, and circles coming out of it look pretty good. Because of the magic fire-thing, I tried to add some light value onto the body, to make it look like it was emanating light.

(Not much to say about the background... I just wanted to make something that looked nice.)

Overall, I'm quite pleased with this pic... for now. I've wanted to draw this guy (in my own style, which is why he doesn't exactly match the official artwork and all) for a while now, and... well, I'll let you all tell me if I've succeeded or not.

As per the usual, if there are any mistakes, feel free to tell me. For now, I hope you like the pic~

=========
Now, here's some "Behind the Scenes" stuff, if you're interested.

First, my first attempt at drawing Iggy... which didn't go so well! (The picture is incomplete, as if you couldn't tell.)

Secondly, a comparison pic; I messed up quite a bit on the sketch, so I had to redraw or fix many things (the glasses, his hair, had to widen his stomach, fix the right leg, etc.).

Last, here's "Version 1" of this image. The only difference is that the background is a solid black bar (and the blur around the character is white, instead of green).

This guy is brilliant. I dislike much of the Koopaling's voice actors; but this guy is hilarious. He's got such a unique, zany look!
And your artwork ain't half bad either ; )

You did a great job, Iggy is my favourite koopaling too :D I like a lot the glowing effect of the fire. (lol the triangle, square an circles remind me the PlayStation just missing the X) Very well done! :)

Funny enough, the Playstation controller buttons also came to my mind, the first time I drew these things. I wonder what made them decide to go with those shapes? Maybe it's some sort of hidden message... Bad guys use those magic symbols, and Sony IS their rival...

Heh, either way, thanks again for the compliment! I was surprised at how well the flame effect actually came out (looks a lot better than what I originally had pictured in my mind, when first drawing this), so I'm glad that worked out in the end. Also, I'm always glad to hear from more Iggy Koopa fans... he needs more attention. :D

 Well, maybe it's a hidden message... or maybe not because nintendo use that shapes since 1990 in the Super Mario World game :XD: and the Playstation was released in 1994.

You're welcome and yes he needs more attention :) Well, I'll draw him someday too.

I'll admit, I did try to go at least a few extra steps to make the picture better than what I've been doing recently. While the final product wasn't exactly what I had in-mind when I first started (what I originally wanted I couldn't figure out how to do, so I was forced to scrap some ideas), I still think it turned out quite nice... and I'm glad you all like it!

Thanks for the compliment! :D

Looks like you got quite a bit of attention out of this one! As I say, I'm no devotee of the whole "Mario Bros." thing, but I can completely relate to enjoying a redesign. I'm on the side that says that Crash Bandicoot's makeover was a good move. (You've inspired again, so maybe I'll draw that one!) As always, good realization of the character on the pic. I kinda like the background! It would make one interested in playing the game.

Honestly, I never thought it would receive this much attention. I expected it to get maybe ten faves after a month or two... but in the first day?? And now it's almost up to thirty!?

I guess that's what happens when you draw someone who's still in the spotlight... Though that's not to say I'm going to jump ship and get away from drawing obscure characters. My heart still goes out to them, I promise. ;)

In regards to Crash Bandicoot's redesign, you know I'm in the same boat with you on that one. Perhaps alongside you, I'll also try drawing him... Well, for me, I'll try drawing him again. Honestly, I'm still disappointed with my previous attempt... Which somehow (for some unholy reason) became my second-most favorited pic (41). I still feel I need to redeem myself on that one, so maybe I'll do that one day.

(Though really, there's two characters in-particular that I need to "Redeem" myself on. Two that I drew so poorly, that I just have to go back and try again on them, some day.)

Heh, thanks! I appreciate your generous compliment. :D

But you know, it really is strange that they haven't appeared in a Paper Mario game yet. I mean, considering how that series likes to make the player collect seven important items (stars, hearts, etc.) across seven individual chapters... and there ARE seven Koopalings. It just seems like an obvious thing to do. Of course, I'm not trying to bash them for trying to create new characters or anything, as I like some of their originals in those games too (like the Koopa Bros, whom I do plan on drawing... one of these days). So, maybe their time will come soon enough? Who knows...

no problem~! I give credit where credit is due ^_^

And yea, I agree. It really does create a perfect plot with the seven of them...*hopes*

I don't think it looks bad. The colors and lighting actually look much better than some of your other work; which tells me you're getting better at coloring these pictures. Overall, I'm glad you decided to upload this one. I think you did a great job. :)

I did try to put some extra care into the lighting and whatnot, so I'm glad to hear that I am at least improving in that department. :D

Thanks for the compliment on the pic! I appreciate it.
